The Ocean Machine was built as a part of the installation of "River in the Hood" which brought Jeffrey Miller together with artist Gregory Gavin along with a group of community volunteers.
A model river was created inside of the artist's studio on San Bruno Avenue and followed a course representing California ecosystems. Beginning in the Sierra Mountains, the river ran down into a model of Hetch Hetchy reservoir, through the foothills, the Central Valley, the Delta, and finally emerged in the back yard into a vision of the Pacific Ocean titled the Ocean Machine.
The Ocean Machine was made from 200 antique sewing machines carefully mounted onto raked blue platform waves. The tightly arranged black dense machines descended into a sandy beach area. Dune grasses and a louvered red cloth sky enclosed the installation. A dock was added to provide the viewer a place to rest while immersed in the Ocean Machine.
The installation was supported by a grant the Potrero Nuevo Fund Prize administered by New Langton Arts.
