UAHC Camp Swig, located in the
Santa Cruz Mountains, is a 180-acre parcel sitting amidst magnificent redwood
and oak trees. Faced with a declining infrastructure the camp has undertaken
the task of rebuilding with the idea of bringing a new focus of camper
activity centered on the arts. The new camp design is a demonstration of
sustainable construction techniques intended to teach new generations of
campers important lessons regarding respect for the environment.
Upon completion, the camp will
feature new camper housing sited in a commons area, new staff housing built
around a central courtyard, a new camp infirmary, new residences for year
round employees, and several new art studios for painting, ceramics, works on
paper, and glass blowing.
All camp wastewater will be
treated on site
and a gray water irrigation system will provide service to a new 25,000 square
foot camp orchard filled with a variety of fruit trees. A new nature trail
will allow access and bring focus to the beauty of the countryside and the
environment of Booker Creek. Many new native trees will be planted and all
existing mature vegetation will be protected during the reconstruction.
Landscape improvements to the central gathering plaza, sports facilities, and
camp swimming pool are also planned.
The restoration of Camp Swig is
undertaken with the support of UAHC, many generous donors, and the energetic
support of nearly 50 years of camp alumni. The rebuilding will take place over
the coming years. Please check back from time to time to see the improvements
as they unfold. | |
