The new Adele Harrison Middle
School is built on a six-acre site in the town of Sonoma. Located at the main
entrance to the town, the school provides new classrooms, gymnasium, library,
and administration buildings that are supported by a full range of outdoor
spaces. The buildings are sited to preserve
existing mature oak trees and a well-established fig and walnut orchard.
Reinforcing an environmentally
focused curriculum, the school landscape design features several environmental
study areas. This includes a deck platform that floats above a meadow planted
with wildflowers. This area retains rainwater during the winter months and has
the added attraction of functioning as a wildlife observation deck. The school
features an extensive garden education area with raised beds and a large-scale
compost education program. A creekside environmental study facility is planned
for future installation.
New outdoor areas include a
central courtyard that functions as the main social gathering space. The
green courtyard has an extensive outdoor eating terrace, a large lawn that
leads to a shaded plaza, and a private library court. Outdoor recreation
facilities at the school include a new full size soccer field and basketball
and volleyball courts. The school is supported by a landscaped faculty parking
area and pedestrian and bicycle links. | |
