This garden in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood extends the living area from inside in a series of outdoor rooms stepping up a hillside. A patio surfaced with hand-made concrete paving stones transitions to a grassy terrace with built-in seating. At the top of the garden is a two-story shingled playhouse with a skylight offering a view of the Golden Gate. A series of low concrete walls and wooden arbors and railings define the garden rooms. Tree ferns and other shade-tolerant plantings bring a lush quality to the north-facing site.
