4200 Geary Blvd

4200 Geary Blvd San Francisco, CA

4200 Geary will be an all-electric affordable housing community focused on enhancing the quality of life for low-income residents by creating a healthy environment, supporting diversity, and advocating for social and economic justice. It will provide permanent affordable housing for low income and extremely low-income seniors.

The mid-rise project is being constructed on a former mortuary site located in the Richmond District of San Francisco. Our design includes landscape development of the streetscape in this busy commercial area, an internal ground level courtyard, and a rooftop farm. New trees on Geary Blvd and 6th Avenue with understory plantings and bike racks will enliven the public streets. The ground level courtyard design provides residents with options for group and individual seating, an exercise loop, and an extended activity area adjacent to the building’s community room. Permeable paving, shade structures and extensive plantings of native and adaptive plantings are incorporated into the courtyard design.

Our team is coordinating with Top Leaf Farms on the design of the rooftop farm that will supplement the community kitchen with healthy vegetables grown on site. Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) and the project team are pursuing the Living Building Challenge as the team recognizes the need to integrate healthy materials into this senior affordable housing project as a health and social justice issue.
