Sergeant Macaulay Park Completed

Sergeant Macaulay Park opened in 1983 in honor of John Macaulay, a police officer who was shot and killed in line of duty in 1982. Located in the Tenderloin (in the heart of Little Saigon), this 9,100 square foot park received its last upgrade in 2000. Aside from needing general improvements to the aging play structures and sparse vegetation, the community expressed interest in creating a playground that includes activities for all ages of children as well as sitting areas for families to congregate and relax. The new renovation was funded through the 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond - Let’s Play SF program.

Miller Company worked with SF Recreation and Parks Department, Trust For Public Land, SF Parks Alliance and Saint Francis Foundation to create a safe, multi-generational park with a coastal-inspired theme. Improvements include a playground that has unique custom-built structures, areas for parents and grandparents to gather, plenty of seating, an elevated area at back to increase visibility and a variation of terrain. Intense involvement by community groups La Voz Latina, Faithful Fools, and Bay Area Women & Children Center, along with residents of the Little Saigon neighborhood, greatly enhanced our insight during the planning stages.
